PESCARA

Pescara is the most populous city in Abruzzo. Located on the Adriatic coast at the mouth of the Aterno-Pescara River, the present-day municipality was established in 1927 through the merger of the old Pescara fortress (on the southern bank of the river) and Castellammare Adriatico (on the northern bank).

Despite its relatively small size, Pescara's old town is a true gem. Its main streets—Corso Manthoné, Via delle Caserme, and Via dei Bastioni (which follows the path of the ancient Roman road that once connected Pescara to Rome)—are full of charm and history. Piazza Garibaldi is the heart of the old town. Within a 500-meter radius, visitors can explore three outstanding museums: the Museo delle Genti d'Abruzzo; the Gabriele D'Annunzio Birthplace Museum; and the Cascella Museum, which houses a remarkable collection of 19th- and 20th-century Abruzzese paintings.

The area also features archaeological sites, such as Santa Gerusalemme—a medieval church built on top of a Roman temple—as well as the Cathedral of Saint Cetteo. Finally, the old town is home to excellent restaurants where visitors can enjoy traditional local cuisine.

Pescara is served by Abruzzo Airport (abruzzoairport.com), located about 5 km west of the city centre. A direct bus service connects the airport to Pescara Centrale railway station, with coaches no. 8 and no. 38 operated by the TUA bus company. Buses run approximately every 20 minutes, and the journey takes about 10 minutes.

Abruzzo Airport offers direct flights to several international destinations, including Brussels Charleroi (CRL), London Stansted (STN), and Düsseldorf Weeze (NRN), primarily operated by Ryanair. Flight timetables may vary depending on the season, with some routes active only from April to October. Travellers are advised to consult the official Abruzzo Airport website or Ryanair's website when planning their trip.

THE MUSEUM

The Genti d'Abruzzo Museum was established in 1973 as a result of initiatives promoted by the Archeoclub (Pescara) and A.S.T.R.A. (Association for the Study of Traditions in Abruzzo). Their aim was to create a permanent exhibition entitled Mostra Archeologica Didattica Permanente.

The Museum traces the history of human presence in Abruzzo from the earliest Paleolithic hunters, highlighting the contribution of nine Italic tribes from Abruzzo and Molise to the formation of ancient Roman civilization.

The Museum is located in the historical centre of Pescara, within the ancient buildings of the Bourbon barracks. The permanent collection is housed in the basement of what was once a fifteenth-century fortress.
